Understanding Corrugated Packaging: Printing, Die Cutting, & Finishing
The manufacturing of corrugated boxes involves a heavy-duty, sequential process. This 2-color flexographic machine represents the critical first step in transforming blank board into branded packaging.
1. The Printing Process (Flexography)
Flexography is the industry standard for printing directly onto corrugated board. It uses flexible photopolymer printing plates wrapped around rotating cylinders.
In this 2-color machine, the board is fed through two separate print stations. An anilox roller transfers a precise amount of fast-drying, water-based ink onto the raised image of the printing plate, which then stamps the image directly onto the corrugated sheet. This process is incredibly fast and ideal for the porous surface of kraft paper.
2. The Die Cutting Process
After the corrugated sheets are printed, they must be cut to shape and creased so they can be folded into a box.
This is achieved using either a rotary die cutter (which uses curved wooden dies on a cylinder for high-speed continuous cutting) or a flatbed die cutter (which stamps a flat steel-rule die onto the board for highly intricate cuts). The die cutting process removes waste areas and presses score lines into the flutes without crushing the board's structural integrity.
3. Print Finishing & Folder Gluing
The final stage converts the flat, printed, and die-cut blanks into finished boxes. The flat blanks are fed into a large folder-gluer machine.
High-speed belts fold the corrugated panels along the pre-scored crease lines, while precise extrusion guns apply heavy-duty cold glue or hot melt adhesive to the manufacturer's joint. The folded and glued boxes are then compressed, counted, and bundled for palletizing and shipping.
