The Digital Large Format Workflow: Printing, Die Cutting, and Print Finishing
The production of rigid displays and custom packaging has shifted heavily towards digital solutions. A flatbed UV printer is the cornerstone of this workflow, seamlessly linking with digital cutting plotters to create complete, ready-to-use products without the need for expensive printing plates or wooden dies.
1. The Printing Process (Digital UV Inkjet)
The raw substrate—such as corrugated cardboard, foam board, or acrylic—is placed onto the vacuum bed of the UV Printer (160 cm x 120 size). The digital inkjet carriage moves across the board.
- White Ink Layering: If the material is dark or clear, the machine can lay down a solid base of White ink first.
- CMYK Application: The vivid CMYK colors are jetted on top of the white base or directly onto light substrates.
- Instant UV Curing: Ultraviolet lamps immediately follow the print heads, flashing the liquid ink into a solid, durable polymer in a fraction of a second.
2. The Die Cutting Process (Digital Plotters)
Because large-format UV printing is ideal for custom jobs and short runs, traditional steel-rule die cutters are rarely used here. Instead, the 160x120 cm printed sheet is moved to a CNC digital cutting plotter. A camera reads registration marks printed by the UV printer. Robotic oscillating knives and creasing wheels then follow a digital CAD file to cut the exact perimeter and press the fold lines directly into the rigid board.
3. Print Finishing & Assembly
The final stage is turning the flat, printed, and cut pieces into functional 3D items. For items like retail display stands (FSDUs) or custom corrugated boxes, this involves manual or semi-automated folding along the creased lines. The tabs are slotted together, and heavy-duty double-sided tape or hotmelt glue is applied to ensure structural stability.
