The Packaging Workflow: Printing, Die Cutting, and Print Finishing

Producing high-quality paper goods and packaging requires a highly coordinated industrial workflow. The Heidelberg Tiegel serves as a vital bridge between flat printed sheets and the final structural product.

    1. The Printing Process

The manufacturing process begins with printing text and graphics onto paper or light cardboard blanks. For the 38 x 48 cm format, this is typically done on small-to-medium format offset lithography presses or high-end digital production printers. Once printed and cured, the sheets are stacked and moved to the print finishing department.

    2. The Die Cutting Process (The Windmill Tiegel Mechanism)

Die cutting gives the printed sheet its physical shape. The Heidelberg Tiegel uses a unique and highly efficient system to achieve this:

    • The Windmill Feeder: A rotating double-arm gripper (resembling a windmill) automatically picks up a blank sheet from the feed stack and swings it precisely onto the platen.
    • The Platen Press (Tiegel): A wooden die board embedded with sharp steel cutting rules is locked into the vertical bed. The heavy cast-iron platen carrying the sheet hinges shut like a clamshell, applying immense, uniform pressure against the die to cut and crease the paper instantly.
    • Delivery: As the platen opens, the second arm of the windmill grabs the finished sheet and swings it to the delivery stack, allowing for rapid, continuous operation.

    3. Print Finishing & Folder Gluing

After exiting the Heidelberg Tiegel, the waste paper (matrix) is stripped away. The final flat blanks are then fed into automated folder-gluer machines. These machines use high-speed belts to fold the cartons along the precise creases made by the die cutter and apply adhesive to the seams, outputting flat-packed boxes ready for fulfillment.
