The Roll-to-Roll Label Workflow: Printing, Die Cutting, and Print Finishing
Unlike sheet-fed commercial presses, modern label production utilizes a continuous "web" (roll-fed) process. This 5-color machine integrates every step of the workflow into a single, high-speed pass.
1. The Printing and Curing Process
The raw self-adhesive paper or film is unwound and fed into the press. It passes through 5 individual color stations (typically CMYK + White or a spot color). As the web moves through each station, ink is applied to the substrate.
Because label presses run at high speeds, the ink must dry instantly before hitting the next roller. This machine utilizes intense UV Driers located after each print station to photochemically cure the ink in fractions of a second. An integrated Camera Inspection System continuously monitors the fast-moving web, magnifying the image on a screen so the operator can ensure perfect color registration.
2. The Die Cutting Process (Rotary)
Once the graphics are printed and cured, the continuous web enters the die-cutting unit. For labels, this requires a highly precise "kiss cut" technique.
- Rotary Die Cutting: A heavy, engraved steel cylinder (the rotary die) rolls against a smooth anvil cylinder. The die cuts through the top layer of the label material (the facestock) and the adhesive, but leaves the silicone backing paper (the liner) completely untouched.
- Matrix Stripping: The waste material surrounding the cut labels (the matrix) is pulled upward and wound onto a waste roll, leaving only the perfectly shaped stickers on the backing liner.
3. Print Finishing (Slitting & Rewinding)
The final stage prepares the labels for the end-user or automatic labeling machines.
- Slitting: The 320 mm wide web often contains multiple labels printed side-by-side across the width. Sharp circular blades (slitters) cut the wide master roll into several narrower lanes.
- Rewinding: These individual lanes are then tightly wound onto separate cardboard cores at the rewinder station. The result is multiple rolls of finished, die-cut labels ready to be boxed and shipped.
