The Packaging Workflow: Printing, Die Cutting, and Print Finishing
To understand the value of a heavy-duty Saroglia platen press, it is helpful to look at how it fits into the broader lifecycle of packaging and print manufacturing.
1. The Printing Process
The journey begins with applying high-quality graphics and text to the raw substrate (paper, cardboard, or synthetics). For the 40 x 65 cm format, this is typically handled by mid-size offset lithography presses or commercial digital printers.
Once the sheets are printed, they are stacked and prepared for the structural transformation.
2. The Die Cutting Process (The Clamshell Mechanism)
Die cutting is where the printed sheet takes its functional shape. Unlike rotary or flatbed cylinder cutters, this Saroglia uses a clamshell (platen) mechanism.
- How it works: The machine operates like an open clam. One side holds the flat cutting die (the steel rules), and the other side (the platen) holds the printed sheet. The machine forcefully hinges shut, pressing the sheet into the die with immense tonnage.
- Advantages: Because the pressure is applied flat and evenly across the entire surface at once, clamshells are unmatched for pushing through very thick materials, creating deep embossing, or executing highly intricate cuts without shifting the paper.
3. Print Finishing & Final Assembly
After the sheets have been cut, creased, or embossed by the Saroglia, the excess waste material is stripped away. The final stage is turning the flat blank into a finished product.
For folding cartons, these blanks are fed into a folder-gluer machine, which folds the creases made by the die cutter and applies adhesive to form a complete, collapsible box ready to be shipped to the end-user.
