The Packaging Workflow: Printing, Die Cutting, and Print Finishing
Creating high-quality packaging like folding cartons or intricate presentation folders requires a precise industrial workflow. The Heidelberg Cylinder SBG is a vital component in the middle of this process.
1. The Printing Process
The manufacturing process starts in the press room. Paper or light cardboard sheets (up to 57 x 77 cm for this specific workflow) are fed into commercial offset presses. Here, high-resolution branding and graphics are transferred onto the sheets using CMYK inks.
After the sheets are printed and coated (if necessary), they are stacked and prepared for the structural transformation in the finishing department.
2. The Die Cutting Process (The Cylinder Mechanism)
This is where the Heidelberg Cylinder SBG shines. Unlike flatbed clamshells, this machine uses a rotary-to-flat mechanism, which is renowned for exact registration and smooth operation.
- How it works: A flat wooden cutting die (with steel rules) is locked onto the flat bed of the machine. The printed sheet is gripped by a heavy, rotating steel cylinder.
- Action: As the flat bed moves horizontally back and forth, the rotating cylinder rolls the paper tightly over the cutting die. This "line contact" pressure ensures incredibly clean cuts and crisp creases without requiring the massive tonnage of a full flatbed press.
- Result: Perfect for medium-format jobs, delivering precision die-cuts, kiss-cuts (for stickers), and deep scoring.
3. Print Finishing & Final Assembly
After exiting the Heidelberg, the waste material (matrix) is stripped away. The resulting flat blank must now be formed into its final 3D shape.
The flat blanks are fed into automatic folder-gluer lines. These machines fold the carton along the precise creases created by the Heidelberg cylinder and apply adhesive to the manufacturer's flap. The finished boxes are delivered flat-packed, ready to be erected and filled by the customer.
