The Small-Format Packaging Workflow: Printing, Die Cutting, and Print Finishing
Manufacturing small paper pockets and mini-envelopes requires highly precise equipment. Handling tiny formats at high speeds is challenging, making this specialized workflow crucial for commercial printers.
1. The Printing Process
Production begins on a high-resolution digital press or commercial offset lithography machine. Since the final product is small (max 120x190 mm), multiple pockets are printed on a single large sheet of paper. The sheets are printed with branding, barcodes, or decorative designs, and sometimes coated with a varnish for extra durability.
2. The Die Cutting Process
The printed sheets are then moved to an automatic die cutting machine. A custom steel-rule die punches through a stack of paper, cutting out the exact cross or diamond-shaped blanks required for the small pockets. The die simultaneously presses fine crease lines into the paper to ensure accurate folding. The waste material is stripped away, leaving only the small blanks.
3. Print Finishing & Assembly (The Pocket Making Machine)
The flat, die-cut blanks are loaded into the feeder of our Small Pocket Making Machine, where they undergo rapid, automated assembly:
- Feeding & Folding: The small blanks are rapidly fed into the machine. Precision plows and folding rollers bend the paper perfectly along the pre-scored crease lines to form the pocket's body.
- The Glue System: A micro-extrusion system or precision glue wheel applies a thin, accurate line of adhesive to the side and bottom seams, bonding the pocket instantly without glue spillover.
- The Strip Unit: As the pocket passes through the final section, an automated tape applicator dispenses a tiny, continuous strip of double-sided "peel and seal" silicone tape, cutting it perfectly to fit the top closure flap.
The finished mini-envelopes and pockets are then neatly stacked and compressed on a delivery conveyor, ready to be boxed and sent to the client.
