The Paper Converting Workflow: Printing, Die Cutting, and Print Finishing
The journey from a flat sheet of paper to a fully assembled 3D product (like a pocket folder or a complex capacity envelope) requires three major industrial stages. The Fidia Magnus acts as the ultimate problem-solver in the final finishing stage.
1. The Printing Process
The process begins on a large-format commercial printing press. Sheets of paper or cardboard (up to 70x100 cm) are printed with high-resolution graphics, logos, and text using CMYK offset lithography. After printing, the sheets may also receive UV varnishes or lamination for added durability.
2. The Die Cutting Process
Once the ink is dry, the flat sheets are transferred to an automatic die cutting machine. Here, a custom-made wooden board fitted with sharp steel blades and dull creasing rules (the die) is pressed into the sheet. This punches out the exact outer contour of the folder or envelope and scores the fold lines. The excess paper is stripped away, leaving a flat "blank".
3. Print Finishing & Complex Folding (The Fidia Magnus Process)
While standard folder-gluers can only fold simple straight lines, the Fidia Magnus is built for the hard jobs:
- Feeding: The large, awkwardly shaped die-cut blanks are fed into the machine via a continuous friction or suction feeder.
- Complex Folding & Creasing: Using highly adjustable plows, swords, and belts, the machine can execute difficult maneuvers—such as folding gussets (capacity folds) for thick document folders, or multi-panel cross folds.
- Adhesive Application: The machine precisely applies cold glue or hot melt adhesive to the necessary flaps. It can also be equipped to lay down strips of double-sided tape or tear-tape automatically.
- Delivery: The finished, glued products pass through a pressing section to ensure the glue sets, and are neatly shingled on a delivery belt for packing.
