The Value-Add Workflow: Printing, Spot UV Coating, and Print Finishing
In the competitive packaging industry, making a product stand out on the shelf is crucial. "Spot UV" is a premium print finishing technique used to highlight specific logos, images, or text with a high-gloss, raised finish. Here is how this machine integrates into the production line.
1. The Initial Printing Process
The workflow starts on a commercial offset lithography or digital press. Sheets of paper or cardboard are printed with the standard CMYK graphics. Often, the entire sheet is then given a matte lamination or a soft-touch aqueous coating. This dull background creates a striking contrast for the glossy Spot UV that will be applied next.
2. The Spot UV & Flexo Coating Process
The pre-printed sheets are loaded into our Spot UV Coating and Flexo Printing Machine:
- Application (Flexo Unit): This machine uses a flexographic process. A custom-made, flexible polymer plate (which only has raised areas where the gloss should go) picks up UV varnish from an anilox roller. As the paper sheet passes through, the plate stamps the clear, glossy liquid precisely onto the targeted areas of the printed design.
- Curing (Long Drier): The varnish must be dried instantly so the sheets don't stick together. The sheet travels through the machine's extended tunnel. The Hot Air Drier helps evaporate any solvents (if using water-based flexo inks), while the high-intensity Long UV Drier photochemically cures the UV varnish into a solid, glossy plastic finish in a fraction of a second.
3. Die Cutting & Final Assembly
Once the sheets are coated and fully cured, they are moved to a flatbed die cutter. A steel-rule die cuts the sheets into the final packaging shapes (like a luxury cosmetic box or a presentation folder) and scores the fold lines. Finally, the blanks are fed through a folder-gluer to assemble the finished 3D product.
