The Small-Format Print Workflow: Printing, Die Cutting, and Print Finishing
The production of high-end, small-format paper goods relies on precision equipment. The Heidelberg Windmill is a cornerstone of this specialized print finishing workflow.
1. The Printing Process
For items like luxury invitations, tags, or small folding cartons, the initial printing is usually done on high-quality digital presses or small-format offset lithography machines.
The printed sheets (up to 38x48 cm) are collected and brought to the finishing area. Because the Windmill is so precise, it requires accurate registration marks printed on the sheets during this first step.
2. The Die Cutting Process (The Windmill Mechanism)
The "Windmill" gets its name from its ingenious and incredibly fast automatic feeding system.
- Feeding: A rotating double-arm gripper (resembling windmill blades) spins continuously. One arm grabs a blank sheet from the feed stack and swings it into the press.
- Action (The Tiegel/Platen): Once the sheet is in place, the heavy cast-iron platen hinges shut like a clamshell, pressing the paper against the locked-up steel-rule die or embossing plate with immense force.
- Delivery: As the platen opens, the second arm of the windmill grabs the finished sheet and swings it out to the delivery stack, while the first arm brings the next sheet in. This allows for extremely high running speeds.
3. Print Finishing & Assembly
Once the small sheets have been die-cut, embossed, or perforated by the Heidelberg Tiegel, the excess paper is stripped away. Depending on the product, the finishing process varies:
- Flat Goods: Items like die-cut business cards or tags are simply stacked and boxed for the client.
- Small Cartons: Die-cut and creased blanks are sent to a folder-gluer machine configured for miniature cartons (like cosmetics or pharmaceuticals) for final folding and gluing.
